Going for Green by Doing More with Less
We start by looking at what is available from the site and the brief by exploiting placement, form and orientation to harness the ‘free’ resources of sun and air, and to eliminate waste and unnecessary reshaping of the site. Careful scientific analysis in the early design stage is necessary to fully realise this potential.
Our buildings are designed to adapt to future needs, thereby offering a much better utilisation of the initial investment throughout their lifetime. Through zoning, spatial simplification and rigorous use of geometry we create flexible layouts and forms that, through their simplicity, are both economic and flexible.
We are enthusiastic about ‘green’ technologies that can further
improve environmental performance and yield savings in carbon and cost over the life of a building. But smart conventional engineering systems attuned to the building fabric can have similar benefits.
We advocate an honest appraisal of which technologies are likely to provide the best long term environmental performance given that not all will be affordable and some green technologies are in an early stage of development.
